First-year students complete a cellular workshop at Shemyakin-Ovchinnikov Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry

First-year students of the educational program "Cellular and Molecular Biotechnology" are completing a large-scale workshop on cell biology. During the second semester, classes were held at the Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry of the Russian Academy of Sciences

The students were helped to master the subtleties of work in the laboratory by experienced mentors — teachers of the discipline Nadezhda Viktorovna Antipova and Rita Valeryevna Chertkova. Under their guidance, students gained basic but extremely important skills in working with various types of cell cultures. During the classes, they learned how to prepare nutrient media and work in a sterile laminar flow box, carry out subcultivation and cryopreservation of cells, as well as evaluate their viability using dyes. A significant part of the workshop was devoted to analysis methods: students conducted experiments to determine the cytotoxicity of chemical compounds and studied cell motility using the "scar tightening" method (scratch test).
A special place in the program was occupied by work with microorganisms. The students mastered the methods of transformation of competent E. coli cells by plasmid DNA containing fluorescent protein genes, and conducted a comparative analysis of the sensitivity of bacteria and yeast to various antibiotics.
Now the students have the last lesson and the defense of the reports on the work done. The skills acquired during the workshop will become a reliable foundation for their further education and research activities in the field of biotechnology.
